Maintaining your Ameda Breast Pump
How do I clean my Milk collection kit?
You can wash the items in warm soapy water and this will remove any milk residue. Dry on a clean towel, absorbent kitchen roll or let air dry.
Which parts should I wash?
You only need to clean the parts that come into contact with milk. This is the funnel, white valve, collection bottle and the diaphragm.
Can I steam sterilise the parts?
We do not recommend steam or microwave sterilisation. The high temperatures can damage the delicate parts which will impair the performance of your pump. If you do wish to disinfect your breast pump parts we recommend the cold water method (Milton or an equivalent) or even the top shelf of a dishwasher.
I am experiencing loss of suction. Why is this?
The valves and diaphragms are consumable parts and will need to be replaced on a regular basis to ensure you do not experience loss of suction at any time.
Do I have the correct flange?
The nipple should sit inside the funnel with a little space around it. Seven funnel sizes are available to provide the optimal convenience during your breastfeeding experience; designed to ensure higher comfort and better milk flow.
Do I need a different size?
If the funnel is too large you will see a lot of your breast tissue being pulled into the tunnel. When the vacuum releases you will see that as your breast tissue recedes up the tunnel, a space around it will appear at the base of the funnel.
Consider a larger size if:
- Your nipple rubs on the tunnel
- Your nipple does not move freely
- Experiencing discomfort/low suction
- Milk flows slowly/you are pumping less milk than expected
Consider a smaller size if:
- Much more than your nipple is drawn into the tunnel
- You are experiencing discomfort/low suction
- You cannot get a good air seal while pumping
